Dr. Michal Čierny
- 1984 - Medical degree graduation in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia
- 1988 and 1993 first and second specialisation exam on surgery (Consultant Surgeon)
- 1992 study stay and training in laparoscopy (Tel-Aviv, Israel, Johns Hopkins University Baltimore, MD and Cleveland Clinic, OH in USA)
- 1993 - 1995 – lector in Surgical Educational Centre for laparoscopy in Trauma Hospital Brno
- 1994 - 1997 – governmental research IGA on laparoscopy in abdominal emergency in Trauma Hospital Brno
- 1998 - Scientific degree CSc, officially corresponding to Ph.D title
- 2000 - 2003 - Board (member of the comittee) of the Miniinvasive and Endoscopic Section of the Czech Surgical Society.
Since 2005 - Board (member of the comittee) and a founding member of the Bariatric Section of both the Czech Surgical and the Czech Obesitologic Society.

The professional career of Dr. Cierny has been focused on minimally invasive abdominal surgery, mainly for gut laparoscopic operations and bariatric surgery. He has been devoted to Weight Loss Surgery since 2003 and WLS has been the major part of his surgical performance since 2005. between 2007- 2009 he was the head of a private newly established BMI Clinic in Brno. Since 2009 Dr. Cierny has moved with his activities to a major modern hospital in Břeclav in order to establish a Centre of Excellence in Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery there.
In addition to his surgical experience, Dr. Cierny is responsible for the founding of the “Bandingklub” in Brno. This is a patient support association to help provide a forum and give information to obese patients who have undergone Weight Loss Surgery or who are interested in bariatric surgery. This has been so successful that the idea has spread and there have been similar groups with the same name forming all over the Czech Republic.
